When Canon was designing the VIXIA HF R70 the main idea was for consumers to be able to find everything they would need within this camera. It is a budget friendly camera that offers so many new features than its predecessor the Canon VIXIA HF R60. With double the memory of R60 at 16 GB and built in Wi-Fi features this camera is said to be the upgrade consumers were searching for. Even though Canon doubled the internal memory it still left the dual SD cards option available on the R70. In terms of upgrades the Canon VIXIA HF R70 had a slight improvement in the batter life as well as an improved LCD display. With the same measurement in screen the R70 and the R60 both measure up to be 3 inches with 230k-dot resolution. One of my favorite features in the R70 would have to be the Canon Movie Uploader App for iOS. Even though it is a favorite feature of mine I would have to say as an Android user it is upsetting that it is only available for iOS. Yet, the R70 is still compatible with Androids using the built-in NFC and the Camera Access App.
Canon VIXIA HF R70 Performance
With all the major improvements in terms of features for the same low price Canon opted to leave the internal specs alone. For the HF R70 Canon left the same video quality and resolution as the R50. However, the HF R70 offers optical image stabilization for shooting smooth videos even when in action. While we are still on the subject of the improvements made to the R70 lets discuss the new improved 5 to 6 hours of battery life now available in the R70. With the R60 only offering 3 hours of battery life I would say this is an amazing performance improvement. Adding the Wi-Fi capabilities to this camera allows consumers to use their smartphone as a controlling device for the camera. This feature also allows consumers to live stream to a compatible device. While Android consumers will be upset that the Canon Movie Uploader app is only for iOS they still offered something for Android users with the Camera Access App. The HF R70 also features Dual Recording. This allows you to record video to the internal flash memory in AVCHD format, and to a SD card in MP4 format at the same time. One feature that stands out is the Baby mode. This feature is the ultimate organizer when it comes to tracking and organizing throughout the baby’s life.
Overall Canon VIXIA HF R70 Review.
Overall for the price of the Canon VIXIA HF R70 this camera is a solid option over the R60. It offers many different features that the R60 didn’t for the same price. Canon went for capturing everything needed under the hood of this camera and I would say they hit the nail on the head. If you are content with the same video quality as the R50 and the R60 but want more features this is the camera for you. With connecting with smartphones this opens up so many possibilities for shooting different types of videos and doing different things with the camera.
- Improved internal storage
- Slight improvement in battery life
- Budget friendly
- Improved LCD display
- No improvement on design
- No improvement of zooming function
The Canon VIXIA HF R70 was a major improvement compared to the R60 without increasing the cost of this camera. However, consumers may get bored with the never changing design and capabilities of the zooming features.
